PETERSEN MEDIA: Paul McMahan and his Destiny Motorsports team made a little noise during the Knoxville Nationals, and when the whirlwind week came to a close, McMahan had successfully locked into his 18th career Nationals feature event and came away with a 13th place finish.

“We had a really good week, but Saturday wasn’t quite what we had hoped for,” McMahan said. “We had worked our way up around the Top-10 at one point, but we had a close call and fell back.”

Kicking the action off on Wednesday night, McMahan would overcome a late qualifying draw and lay down a great lap as he timed the MonDak Portables/Ft. Union Supply and Trading/Champion Brand Lubricants No. 4 machine in eighth quickest in time trials.

Lining up in the seventh starting spot in his heat race, McMahan would fight hard to get into the fourth and final transfer spot. Under fire for the position, McMahan would make a big move getting into turns three and four the secure the spot and safely advance into the important qualifying night feature event.

Find himself in the second row for the 25-lap feature, McMahan would slip back to fifth when the race came to life. Battling with the best in what was a very tough qualifying night feature event, McMahan would finish eighth in the feature, which placed him eighth in the ultra-important Nationals points after one night.

Eagerly watching Thursday night’s program, when the checkered flew on that program, McMahan sat 12th in points and was officially locked into the Saturday night Nationals feature event for the 18th time in his career.

Saturday night, McMahan and company would get off to a nice start during the 50-lap Knoxville Nationals feature event. Working his way forward, McMahan would flirt with position inside the Top-10.

A restart just prior to the scheduled break would see McMahan avoid a near disaster though it would result in him falling back to 15th, where he would run at the race’s halfway point.

The Destiny Motorsports team would make subtle changes during the three-minute break, and back underway, McMahan would work his way forward a couple of positions in the race as he closed his Nationals out with a 13th place finish.

“We had hoped to have a better showing in the feature, but we just couldn’t get going after the break,” McMahan added. “We had a great week in Knoxville, and I am really proud of this team.”
