PETERSEN MEDIA: Invading Pennsylvania and Canada over the last week, Paul McMahan’s charge from 20th to 12th during the Don Martin Memorial Silver Cup and Lernerville Speedway would highlight the busy week.
“We were pretty good at Lernerville and moved forward pretty well,” Paul McMahan said. “At the Grove it was right around the top and we were holding our own but I made a mistake and got over the cushion late and lost a few positions.”
Tuesday night in Sarver, PA, McMahan would get the night started out by timing the MonDak Portables/Ft. Union Supply and Trading/Champion Brand Lubricants backed No. 4 entry in 10th quickest in his time trial flight.
Picking up the fifth and final transfer spot in his heat, the Nashville, TN resident would move directly into the 40-lap $25k-to-win feature event where would take the green flag from the 20th starting position.
On a track that featured a beefy cushion, McMahan would have no problem working his way forward. Running an aggressive race, the California native would find himself fighting for a Top-10 finish late in the race.
Battling with Shane Stewart and Carson Macedo in the latter stages of the event, McMahan would end his charge forward with a 12th place finish.
Heading to Williams Grove Speedway on Friday night for the Summer Nationals, McMahan would get off to a quick start as the All Star Performance/KSE Racing Products/FK Indy backed entry would end up sixth quickest time trial flight A.
Battling with Lucas Wolfe in heat race action, McMahan would finish in the fourth spot, and line up in the 15th starting position for the 25-lap Summer Nationals opening night feature event.
With most everyone running on the cushion in the ‘A’, McMahan would follow suit as he would pick up a couple of early spots in the running order. As the race moved along, passing would be at a premium as everyone was just about the same speed up top.
A late restart would see McMahan hit the curb too hard and it would result in him giving up some spots as he slipped back to the 18th spot .
Saturday’s feature event would succumb to rain and will now be made up in late September as part of the National Open, and Sunday’s event in New York was completely washed out.
Traveling to Oshweken Speedway in Canada on Tuesday night, McMahan simply summed it up by stating it was a rough night.
Unable to do much in the feature event, McMahan and the Destiny Motorsports team would come away with a 19th place finish.
“We just couldn’t get going and really struggled at Ohsweken Speedway,” McMahan said. “Now is the time of the year where we need to be running well so we will go to work this week and do everything we can to be better at Hartford Speedway and Wilmot Raceway this weekend.”
