PETERSEN MEDIA: Competing in the home state of his car owners over the weekend, Paul McMahan would pick up a ninth place finish on Sunday night at the NoDak Speedway after a 12th place effort on Friday night at the River Cities Speedway.
“We are certainly better than we have been, but we are still chasing things a little,” Paul McMahan said. “It was a great chance for our team to meet some people from MonDak Portables, and see their home base.”
Sunday night at the NoDak Speedway, McMahan would kick things off by timing the MonDak Portables/Ft. Union Supply and Trading/Rick Rogers Construction No. 7 machine in ninth fastest.
On the racy speedway, McMahan would battle for the second spot in the opening stages of his heat race but as the field got strung out he would settle for third, which would place him in the fifth row for the 35-lap feature event.
Continuing to watch the track conditions as it went slick during the course of the night, McMahan would find himself battling with the likes of Shane Stewart, Joey Saldana, and Jason Sides in the early goings of the feature event.
Able to move high and low, McMahan would find himself as high as the seventh spot in the action packed race. With cars in a tight knit battle, McMahan would lose a couple of positions as he fell back to ninth as the leaders navigated through traffic.
Falling off the track on a lap 26 restart, McMahan would only lose a handful of spots with lapped cars going to the tail, and he would pick up a couple of positions in the closing laps to tally a ninth place finish at the stripe.
The North Dakota double-header weekend would kick off on Friday night at the thrilling River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks, ND where McMahan would lay down the eighth fastest lap in his qualifying flight and line up in the second row of his heat race.
Battling a dislodged nosewing for the duration of the heat, the Elk Grove, CA native turned Hendersonville, TN resident would hang on to finish in the fourth spot and punch his ticket into the 40-lap feature event.
Lining up 16th, McMahan would take a liking to the bottom of the speedway as he was able to make ground at the start of the race. Able to crack the Top-10, McMahan would break into the ninth spot, though lapped traffic would soon pose a problem.
With a slower car working his groove, McMahan would be forced to search the middle and top side of the speedway and just could not make the same speed. Losing a few positions trying to get back to the bottom of the speedway, McMahan would take the checkered flag with a 12th place finish.
“We have been throwing packages together, and we are getting better,” McMahan said. “I am fortunate to have some great owners who are working hard to get this thing up front, and I think we are making gains. We have some great tools at our disposal so we will see what we can do on the West Coast.”
