PETERSEN MEDIA: Like much of the racing world, Paul McMahan would take to the Knoxville Raceway for the Knoxville Nationals with a heavy heart. Doing his best to put his emotions behind him, McMahan would give it his all during the Nationals though would come up short as he would finish in the C main.
“It was a trying week both emotionally and on the track,” Paul McMahan said. “We were in a good spot in our heat race during our qualifying night but a slight stumble on the start kind of hurt us and we were in the hole the rest of the week.”
Timing the MonDak Portables/Champion Oil/Ft. Union Supply and Trading No. 7 machine in 19th fastest during his qualifying run on Wednesday night, the Nashville, TN driver would line up in the third row of his heat race. Needing to finish in the top four, a slight stumble when the green lights flickered saw the leaders get away with McMahan running in the fifth spot.
Closing in on Jamie Veal in the closing laps, McMahan would be unable to get the spot and would be forced into the B Main. Lining up in the 11th spot of the B, McMahan would get going forward after a few laps.
Using the cushion, McMahan would show some speed as he worked forward to finish in the seventh spot.
Returning to the speedway on Friday night for another shot at transferring directly into the Knoxville Nationals feature event, McMahan would time in 23rd quickest before a sixth place finish in his heat race would force him into one of the twin B Main events.
Again lining up deep in the B, McMahan would find himself in the seventh row needing to work his way up into the Top-Three positions in just 12 laps to move into the feature event.
Doing all he could in a very short race, McMahan would work his way up to finish eight, which would place him in the Saturday night C Main event.
Lining up in the 10th row for the 15-lap ‘C’, McMahan would continue to work his way forward as he did all week as he worked his way toward the Top-10. Looking for more positions as the laps slicked off, McMahan would get up into the 10th spot, but would end up finishing in the 11th spot and bringing his Nationals to a close early than hoped.
“The C main was certainly not what we had hoped for, but I am proud of these guys for continuing to work hard not give up,” McMahan said. “It was a tough, long week for everyone, and I am thankful to the Rogers family for everything they continue to do.”
