PETERSEN MEDIA: Closing up the extended Spring Break trip to California over the weekend, Paul McMahan and his Destiny Motorsports team had their best weekend of the season as the Nashville, TN driver recorded a trio of Top-10 finishes.
“We are continuing to get better and we have made some changes in our engine package that seemed to help a ton over the weekend,” Paul McMahan said. “It was a tough trip to the West Coast at times, but our entire team really has to thank Brian Sperry and Lee Lindgren for lending us a hand while Scott Benic recovered from surgery. It was good to get him back for these final races on the West coast.”
Friday night at the Bakersfield Speedway, McMahan timed the MonDak Portables/Ft. Union Supply and Trading/Benic Enterprises car in 13th quickest before a fifth place run in his heat race.
Continuing to dial in the Rick Rogers Construction/Maxim Engines No. 7, McMahan would take the green flag from the seventh row in what would be an eventful feature event on the 1/3 mile Bakersfield Speedway.
Showing some great speed, McMahan was able to work his way forward and insert himself inside the Top-10, before a series of yellows would lead to a couple of key double file restarts. Taking advantage, McMahan was able to grab a couple of more positions as he worked his way to finish in the seventh spot.
Making their final start of the season in California until September on Saturday night at the Perris Auto Speedway, McMahan continued to show speed as he timed in seventh fastest on the famous ½ mile track located in Southern California.
Following a fifth place finish in his heat, the Elk Grove, CA native would again grid the field from the seventh row in what would be a 30-lap feature event. Able to grab some spots early in the race, McMahan would settle into the Top-10 as passing got tough in the waning laps.
Careful to hit his marks, McMahan took the checkered flag with his second consecutive Top-10 finish.
Looking to end his trip on a high note, the team would check into the USA Raceway in Tucson, AZ on Monday night. Timing in well again, McMahan’s eight quick effort would put him in the second row of his first heat race. Finishing fourth in his first heat, McMahan would line up on the front row of his second heat, and picking up the win McMahan would move into the Dash.
Finishing in the sixth spot, McMahan would take the green flag from the third row aboard his Boss Signs and Graphics/Walker Filtrations System/FK Rod Ends machine.
When the race went green, McMahan would battle with the likes of Donny Schatz, Jason Johnson, and David Gravel as they jockeyed for fourth through eighth in the running order.
Coming out of the fray back in the eighth spot, McMahan would search around the slick 3/8 mile track as he continued to work on Gravel who ran in front of him.
Turning in a strong 30-lap performance, McMahan would take the checkered flag with an eighth place finish as the series now heads back to the Midwest.
“We have to be consistent right now, and we are heading that way,” McMahan added. “Top-10’s turn into Top-5’s and soon Top-5’s transfer into wins, so we just have to keep working and stay patient. With this being the end of our trip, our entire team really sends a huge thank you out to Mike Caldwell form C&H Enterprises for being such a gracious host and allowing us to work out of his shop while we were in the area.”
Destiny Motorsports would like to thank MonDak Portables, Ft.
