PETERSEN MEDIA: A daunting week of racing out West came to a close on Sunday night in Antioch, CA and though the trip did not end the way David Gravel and his Destiny Motorsports team had hoped, Gravel was able to pick up a trio of Top-10 finishes and qualify extremely well.
“I was really pleased with how the week went,” David Gravel said. “We have been qualifying really well, and that is allowing us to continue to fine tune our cars nightly.”
Taking to the Gray’s Harbor Raceway on Monday night, Gravel would time the MonDak Portables/Ft. Union Supply and Trading/Benic Enterprises No. 7 machine in third fastest, earning himself a spot in the Dash.
Lining up fourth in the feature event, another tricky surface in Washington would force drivers to carefully navigate around the speedway. Battling with Joey Saldana and Kerry Madsen, the Watertown, CT driver would earn a fifth place finish.
Heading to the Cottage Grove Speedway on Wednesday night, Gravel would time in eighth fastest, before finishing second in his heat race aboard the Rick Rogers Construction/Maxim Chassis/Boss Signs and Graphics backed entry.
From his sixth row starting spot, Gravel was able to move forward on the ¼ mile bullring. Getting inside the Top-10, Gravel would battle with Kerry Madsen and Joey Saldana in the closing laps to finish in the eighth spot.
Friday and Saturday the scene would be the Silver Dollar Speedway for the 62nd Annual Gold Cup Race of Champions. Timing in fifth fastest in his qualifying flight, Gravel would line up on the front row of his heat needing a win to move into the Dash.
A questionable call penalized Gravel a row, and a fourth place finish in his heat would place him in the fifth row of the A Main.
With the caution flag waiving on a pair of occasions in the first seven laps, Gravel was able to work his way up into the fifth spot. What would be the final restart of the night would not go how Gravel had hoped, as he would lose a couple of positions and fall to seventh, where he would end up finishing.
The 62nd Annual Gold Cup Race of Champions finale on Saturday night saw Gravel time in fourth fastest in his flight, and finish third in his heat race.
Lining up ninth in the A Main, Gravel would have his hands full with a tight racecar on the reworked surface as he slipped back to finish in the 14th spot.
Regrouping and heading to the Antioch Speedway to close out the trip on Sunday night, Gravel again laid down some great laps during qualifications as he timed in third fastest.
Running fourth in his heat, Gravel would move to the Dash, where a seventh place finish put him in the fourth row of the 30-lap feature event. Working his way forward on the extremely slick racing surface, Gravel found himself in the fifth spot with just a few laps to go.
Having a good run going, Gravel would look to get by fourth running Brad Sweet on the 27th lap, but would get out of shape and spin his entry out, and finish 18th.
“I definitely let the team down on Sunday night trying to do too much,” Gravel said. Other then that, we accomplished a lot of good things on this trip, and hopefully we can continue to build as the season winds down. I have to thank the Rogers family and all of my guys for busting their butt’s all week long.”
Destiny Motorsports would like to thank MonDak Portables, Ft. Union Supply and Trading, Benic Enterprises, Rick Rogers Construction, Maxim Chassis, Boss Signs and Graphics, Rod End Supply, Driver Websites, Petersen Media, GME Manufacturing, ButlerBuilt, Simpson Race Products, Parker Engines, Keizer Wheels, DMI, Red Devil Brakes, Champion Oil, All Pro Cylinder Heads, Astro Titanium, and Hoosier Tire for their support in 2015.
