PETERSEN MEDIA: The new surface on the Skagit Speedway would make for a rough surface on Saturday night during the Monster Energy Meltdown, and unfortunately for David Gravel he would be a victim and wind up finishing in the 17th position.
“Unfortunately on the start of the race we hooked a rut and spun out,” Gravel said. “We were able to restart, but then we got collected in wreck and the crew did a great job getting us back on the track.”
With 26 cars at the Skagit Speedway on Saturday night for the Monster Energy Meltdown, David Gravel would time the MonDak Portables/Ft. Union Supply and Trading/Benic Enterprises No. 7 machine in seventh fastest.
Finish third in heat race action, the Watertown, CT pilot would line up in the fifth row for the 35-lap A Main event. A new surface on the Skagit Speedway mixed with inclement weather during the week equaled a rough and tumble surface on this night, and it unfortunately ate up some equipment.
When the race went green, Gravel would get into turns one and two when he would hook a rut and spin his machine out, though he would be able to race on. Restarting from the tail end of the field, Gravel would find himself in harms way a few laps later as he was involved in a wreck that broke out in front of him.
With extensive damage to his machine, Gravel would head to the work area as the crew thrashed to get his car back on the speedway. Able to restart the race, Gravel’s car was notably battered, but Gravel fought hard.
Able to ride out the rest of the wild A Main, Gravel would take the checkered flag with a 17th place finish.
“Aside from having the luck that we did have, I thought we had a pretty good car,” Gravel said. “I really have to thank everyone that helped us get the car back together, and hopefully Monday night we can start a busy week off on a good note.”
