PETERSEN MEDIA: David Gravel and his Destiny Motorsports team closed their three races in three different states stretch out on Friday night with a very strong fourth place finish on a very slick and abrasive Huset’s Speedway on Sunday night.
“We had a good draw and took advantage of the spot we were in,” the Watertown, CT pilot said. “We struggled a little on Friday and Saturday night so it was awesome to get a Top-5 to close out the weekend.”
Getting a favorable qualifying draw on Sunday, Gravel would give his Destiny Motorsports team a shot in the arm early as he was able to time the MonDak Portables/Ft. Union Supply and Trading/Champion Brand Lubricants backed No. 7 machine in third quickest.
On an extremely slick racing surface early in the night, Gravel was able to advance from fourth to third during his heat race, and earn a berth into the night’s dash that would set the first four rows of the feature event.
Lining up in the second row of the dash, the 2014 National Open champion would finish in the fifth position, putting him in the third row for the 35-lap feature event.
As the race went green, Gravel would slip back to the sixth spot, where he would battle with Kraig Kinser and Danny Lasoski as he looked for a spot inside the Top-Five.
Tip-toeing around an extremely slick surface, passing would come at a premium on this night. As the leaders got into heavy traffic on the 19th lap, the complexion of the race would change and the lead duo would get caught up in traffic, and Gravel would take advantage and move into the fourth spot.
Over the final 15 markers of the race, passing became even more difficult, though Gravel would do everything he could to get on to the podium, but in the end would settle for a fourth place finish.
“It was a long day with the fiasco at Knoxville all day Saturday and into the early hours of Sunday morning, so I really have to thank my guys for busting their butts for me, “ Gravel said. “We were all wore out, so I thank them for working hard.”
Friday night at Crawford County Speedway in Dennison, IA, the new World of Outlaw format would see Gravel time in 14th fastest overall, but he was 10th quickest in his flight and would miss the heat race inversion.
Finishing sixth in his heat, Gravel would finish second in the B to earn a spot in the feature event where he would work his way from the 20th starting position to finish 16th.
Saturday night would be a long one Knoxville, IA. After timing in 11th fastest in his qualifying flight, Gravel would work his way from sixth to fourth in his heat race and earn a spot in the feature event.
Rains would roll into the area, and officials elected to wait it out, and keep the track in racing form. When the feature finally took the speedway around 2am local time, a thick fog would roll in, and the race would only go 15 laps before being called official. Gravel would finish 21st.
“It was a strange weekend with the big delay and acclimating to the new format, but car wise, I was happy with where we got it by Sunday night,” Gravel said. “We are working really well together and we are continuing to improve in certain areas. I really want to thank my team, as well as Rick and Barb Rogers for continuing to support us.”
Destiny Motorsports would like to thank MonDak Portables, Ft. Union Supply and Trading, Benic Enterprises, Rick Rogers Construction, Maxim Chassis, Boss Signs and Graphics, Rod End Supply, Driver Websites, Petersen Media, GME Manufacturing, ButlerBuilt, Simpson Race Products, Parker Engines, Keizer Wheels, DMI, Red Devil Brakes, Champion Oil, All Pro Cylinder Heads, Astro Titanium, and Hoosier Tire for their support in 2015.
ON TAP: Destiny Motorsports and David Gravel will return to action Tuesday night at the Granite City Speedway, Friday night at the River Cities Speedway, and Saturday night at the Dakota State Fair Speedway.
