PETERSEN MEDIA: Continuing to transition and gel with Destiny Motorsports, David Gravel had a nice weekend with the World of Outlaws that was highlighted by a run from 16th to 8th at the Salina Highbanks on Friday night.
“It was a nice weekend for our team,” Gravel said. “We had some issues, and got caught up in some other people’s messes, but there were a lot of positives I thought.”
Kicking a very busy weekend off on Friday night, Gravel timed the MonDak Portables/Ft. Union Supply and Trading/Benic Enterprises No. 7 machine in 16th fastest, putting him in the third row of his heat race.
Picking up a fourth place finish in heat race action, Gravel would transfer directly into the feature event, and line up in the eighth row.
From his 16th starting spot, Gravel had a very strong racecar, as he worked his way towards the Top-10 from the start of the race. Getting by Joey Saldana and Donny Schatz, Gravel would work the Destiny Motorsports machine inside the Top-10, as he would finish his night off with an eighth place finish.
“We had a car that raced very well on Friday night,” Gravel said. “We were a little off in time trials, and that hurt us, but I was happy we were able to move forward.”
Heading to the I-55 Raceway in Pevely, MO on Saturday night, Gravel would time in 14th fastest, and line up on the front row of his heat race. Starting alongside Rico Abreu, Gravel would battle for the top spot, but Abreu would get the position with Gravel settling for the second spot.
Losing an engine on the last lap of the heat race, the Destiny Motorsports team went to work, and was able to get Gravel a fresh power plant in time for the feature event.
Lining up in the 15th spot for the feature event, Gravel again was able to move forward on the high-banked speed plant. Getting inside the Top-10, Gravel took evasive action in lapped traffic, and contact from behind spun him around, and forced him to the tail of the field.
From the back of the pack, the Watertown, CT pilot was able to get his machine moving forward, as he salvaged his night with an 11th place finish.
“We had some engine issues early, but the guys did a great job of getting everything sorted out, and getting us a good car in the feature event,” he added. “We had a hiccup in lapped traffic, but were able to get back towards the Top-10.”
Closing his weekend out on Sunday night at the Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt, IN, Gravel would time in 11th quickest, before finishing third in his heat race putting him 13th on the starting grid.
A double file restart saw cars get together in front of Gravel, and with another car getting into his nose wing, Gravel would take his machine to work area to get repairs.
In a wild feature event, Gravel would restart from the back of the pack, and end his night with a 14th place finish.
“It was nice to get three nights of racing in with everyone at Destiny Motorsports,” Gravel said. “We raced pretty well on Friday and Saturday, and struggled a little bit on Sunday night, but were still able to move forward, which is a good thing. It has been a nice transition so far, and we are continuing to gel. I have to thank all of the guys for their hard work, and hopefully we can put together a strong showing at Eldora this weekend.”
