Dollansky and Destiny Motorsports Continue To Gain At Winter Heat
PETERSEN MEDIA: After debuting their new partnership during the 2014 World Finals, Destiny Motorsports and Craig Dollansky headed to Arizona to kick their 2015 season off at the Winter Heat Showdown, taking place at the Cocopah Speedway.
“Through three races we have been making progress and changes each night, and I seem to be getting more comfortable,” Craig Dollansky said.
Kicking 2015 off last Friday night, Dollansky lined the MonDak Portables/Aggressive Hydraulics/Benic Enterprises No. 7 machine up on the front row of his heat race, and went on to grab the win.
With points being tabulated after four heat races, Dollansky lined up fifth in his qualifier, and finished in the fourth spot, putting him sixth overall in points, and in the third row for the feature event.
Moving into the fifth spot on the first lap, the yellow would then wave bunching the field back up. When the action resumed, Dollansky fell back a few spots, before getting into the inside berm and spinning up the track, only to have another car hit him, and end his night.
“I was struggling with the car a little last Friday night, and I lost it,” he admitted. “We had some contact, and unfortunately it ended our night.”
Back in action on Saturday night, the Destiny Motorsports team would look to rebound, and things went well early in the night as Dollansky would finish second in the heat race, before charging from eighth to second in the qualifier.
Sitting fourth in points heading into the feature event, the Elk River, MN driver would line the Rick Rogers Construction/Maxim Chassis/Boss Sign and Graphics machine up on the outside of the second row.
As the race came to life ‘The Crowd Pleaser’ held down the fourth spot, as he worked the high scary side in the first set of turns, and took a liking to the bottom in turns three and four. Following a caution at the halfway point, Dollansky would battle with Stevie Smith and lose the position, as his machine began losing air in the right rear tire.
While battling a deflating tire, Dollansky would then battle a car running low on fuel late in the race. Doing all he could to hang on to a nice finish, Dollansky would coast across the stripe in the eighth spot.
“Saturday night we had a car that was deserving of finishing in the top four,” he added. “With about three to go it started sputtering, and that mixed with a cut tire made things difficult, but we were able to coast across the line in eighth.”
With a couple of nights off, the team regrouped, and returned to action last night in the third of five Winter Heat races.
Though the end result was not what the team had hoped for, Dollansky saw some silver lining as the car admittedly felt the best it had all week.
Finding himself in the seventh spot near the halfway point of the feature event, Dollanskly began making some moves, as he was able to sneak under Brian Brown to take the sixth spot, as he watched Aaron Reutzel and Logan Schuchart battle just ahead of him.
Pounding the cushion in turns three and four, Dollanskly was able to take advantage of Reutzel’s misfortune on lap 13 to move into the fifth spot.
On the 15th lap, the complexity of the race changed, as the race leader slowed with a flat right rear tire, and Dollansky moved into the fourth spot for the single file restart.
The ensuing restart saw the Dollansky stay committed to the top as he got by Schuchart to take over the third spot, as he chased after the lead duo of Paul McMahan and Steve Kinser.
With a few laps to go, Dollansky looked to make a move to jump into the second spot, but a slight hiccup caused his machine to get out of shape resulting in a very violent crash that would destroy his machine, but Dollansky was able to climb from the wreckage uninjured.
“Last night was by far the best the car has felt all week,” he said. “We were solidly in the top-three, and I got into the wall going for another position. I really wanted to get the win for this entire team, and I tried to open my entry to keep our corner speed but it did not work out. I really have to thank this entire team because they are working hard, and we will get stronger as we go.”
